All through his life Watson has been trying to apply Sherlock Holmes’ method of investigation. And so, instead of carefully analysing the details, he limits himself to cursory observations from which he draws conclusions that by the nature of things can only be erroneous. This happens again in the investigation that the desperate little Miss Sommerville confides to the famous duo of sleuths: to find her beloved rhinoceros that has suddenly disappeared. As the little girl describes the characteristics of her pachyderm, Watson launches into conclusions already at the first clue - the presence of the horn on the forehead; there it is, running through the heath! But it is only the gamekeeper who is leading the fox chase! Another characteristic – fat and grey – leads to another error, a hippopotamus. And so on, from one mistake to another, under Holmes’ silence. Until finally, with all the clues collected and considered and the logical deduction arrived at, comes the famous “elementary, Watson!” The beloved rhinoceros is nothing but a toy of soft plush!
