As in the authors’previous book “L’autobus di Rosa” (Rosa’s Bus) , “Fuorigioco” (Sidelined) looks at a major event in history from the point of view of a child. It is based on the true story of great Austrian footballer Matthias Sindelar (1903-1939) - that is actually much more than a football story. After the Austrian state was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938, the Nazis ordered the dissolution of the Austrian football team into a common one with Germany. On 3 April 1938, when Austria played Germany in its last match as an independent team, Sindelar scored to the victory of his national team, and refused to give the Nazi salute to the German authorities. In the following months, he always refused to play for the German team. In 1939 he was found dead with his girlfriend - and their death has long been a mystery. By Fabrizio Silei and Maurizio Quarello – the same authors of our best seller “L’autobus di Rosa”, translated in nine languages with more then 35.000 copies sold all around the world – Sindelar’s story is a symbol of resistance and an homage to the victims of the Holocaust.
