Tony Mannaro arrived in town carrying two suitcases. In one, he put his dreams, written on coloured pieces of paper. In the other, a black leather suitcase, he was carrying his sax. That sax is his life. It’s also dream number 1: “To become the city’s most famous saxophonist.”Dream number 2: “To join Maria Pig’s band.” But there’s a problem: maybe because of all that hair, or those sharp teeth, or those pointy fingernails, they throw him out of every joint in town. And Maria Pig doesn’t want anything to do with him. The saxophone grows louder; it vibrates, and out comes an irresistible force that is more tenacious than diffidence, deeper than intolerance. His music will make it all the way to the heart of the city. Prize: 2006 Liber Award, 2006 "Il Gigante delle Langhe" Award, special prize for illustration
